Indonesia is one of a country with the highest biodiversity in the world. Among ~20,000 orchid species in the world, Indonesia is estimated to be a home for around 5,000 of them. Orchid is also has a high standing in Indonesian society. Phalaenopsis amabilis (moth orchid) is commemorated as Indonesian national flower. They also valued highly as a horticultural commodity. Research on Indonesian orchids has covered a wide range of topics such as conservation, propagation, breeding, and various other topics. Orchid has a reputation to have slow growth rate and require a long time to switch between their vegetative and generative phase.  Advancements of genetic technologies have influenced orchid research and works have started to study and improve various traits on orchid. We are currently working to characterize endogenous local orchid genes to study their roles in orchid development and flowering.
