Professor Hiroshi Takagi (Laboratory of Applied Stress Microbiology) was announced to receive the Medal with Purple Ribbon in the field of Applied Microbiology on April 28, 2022. Professor Takagi has conducted a wide range of research, from original basic research focusing on the molecular functions of intracellular enzymes and amino acids and the mechanisms of cellular tolerance to environmental stress, to applied research aimed at industrial applications, such as the breeding of practical strains and fermentative production in bacteria and yeasts. He has received numerous academic awards and has held important positions in domestic and international academic societies, including President of the International Commission on Yeasts. He was finally recognized for his significant contributions to the promotion of science and technology.
The transmission ceremony, which is usually held at the Imperial Palace, has been canceled in order to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus infection, and will be held at the campus on May 17, 2022.
Award comment
I am deeply honored to receive the Medal with Purple Ribbon in the field of Applied Microbiology. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the scientists including collaborators in both Japan and overseas who have guided and supported me, as well as to the faculty members and students in my past and current laboratory. I would also like to thank the countless microorganisms that have given their valuable lives.
I have been analyzing various cellular and molecular functions of yeast and bacteria as well as conducting research aimed at industrial applications. I will continue to learn from microorganisms as I strive to create research results and return them to human life and earth environments.
