UCD Online Journal Seminar was held.
The Biological Science (BS) Division, NAIST and the University of California Davis (UCD) jointly hold journal seminars using the remote meeting system in January-March every year. In the 13th year of the program, 7 students from the Division of biological Science of NAIST and 5 students from UCD participated. A total of 16 mentor faculty members, one from NAIST and one from UCD, participated in each of the 8 sessions and played a role in selecting papers, facilitating discussion and answering participants' questions.
The unique feature of this seminar is close reading of a wide range of cutting-edge papers in the field of plant science and getting advice from experts in each field. Though the students have different areas of expertise and research experience, asking questions and teaching each other in a relaxed atmosphere makes the course more interactive. It is also a valuable experience for students to learn about the differences in teaching approaches between Japanese and U.S. faculty members. In particular, the smaller class size this year allowed more time for discussion.
We have a new structure with Assoc. Prof. Ikeuchi from Division of Biological Science, NAIST and Prof. Bo Liu from UCD serving as the organizer from this year. We would like to further develop this lecture while continuing the good relationship that Prof. Nakajima and Prof. John Harada have established between the two schools.
