2023 International Student Workshop was held
The 2023 International Student Workshop was held at the University of California, Davis for five days from November 5th to 9th, 2023.
The total of 44 students from Division of Biological Science at NAIST (19 D2 students), University of California Davis (UCD, 12 students), and Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Genetic and Development Biology (CAS-IGDB, 13 students) participated in this year’s workshop.
This program is designed to foster international communication skills among D2 students of the doctoral course at the division of Biological Science through research exchanges with graduate students from the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
This year, we were invited by the University of California, Davis to hold this event in the United States.
During the workshop, students from Japan, the U.S., and China were mixed to form groups of 4 to 7 students, who presented and discussed their research. In addition, special lectures were given by Associate Professor Noriaki Sasai (Division of Biological Science, NAIST), Dr. Sean Burgess (UCD), and Dr. Jun Xiao (CAS).
In the latter half of the program, a poster session was held, where lively discussions were seen everywhere. The participants were able to exchange their research in a different sense from that of oral presentations. This was followed by oral presentations by the four student speakers selected in the research presentations. They had such a productive time.
Additionally, small mixed teams from Japan, the U.S., and China produced videos on biotech topics. The nine videos were screened at the end of the workshop, and the voting and award ceremony for the best video were held with great excitement.
Participants were able to not only present their research with graduate students from the U.S. and China, but also develop friendships and international perspectives through mutual recognition of each other's research, future, and career perspectives
in their respective countries. It was an unforgettable experience for our students to interact with students from different cultures and backgrounds.
