The NAIST Open Campus was held as part of Takayama Science Town Festival on Sunday November 10. During this event, our facilities and laboratories were open to public and visitors had an opportunity to learn the possibilities and joy of science.
The event attracted more than 2,000 participants in the Division of Biological Science alone. We organized two hands-on experience programs that were intended for elementary students and older. Participants of the “Play with microbes” program learned about microorganisms on earth and the power of them, and observed actual microbes. The program “The world is full of rhythms” featured rhythms in life, such as internal clocks in animals and plans, as well as cell division cycles. Unlike the programs we organized in the past years, participants were required to reserve seats for these hands-on programs in advance, and the program went more smoothly without having to have participants wait in long lines. Both programs were fully booked, and we hope the participants enjoyed the experience.
In the Division of Biological Science lobby, each laboratory presented their research at a booth. They put efforts to prepare posters and fun demos so their research topics can be easily understood even by young children. In addition, we had a booth to introduce our school to prospective students, where many students stopped and asked about the admission exams and research programs.
